Official summary of the law (Knesset)

The Amendment establishes, for the first time, leave for a father following the birth of his child. Prior to this amendment, an employee was permitted to be absent from work on the day of his partner's childbirth, charged against his accumulated sick leave. This amendment allows an employee to be absent from work for five additional days, starting from the day after the birth. The first three days of absence shall be charged against the employee's annual vacation leave quota, or against unpaid leave if the employee has no accumulated annual vacation days. The remaining two days shall be charged against the employee's sick leave quota. The Amendment provides that these sick days are a continuous extension of the birth day, which is already recognized as a sick day, and therefore the employee shall be entitled to payment of half sick pay for each of these two sick days.
