About the law and the debate

Official summary of the law (Knesset)

The Law expands the legal aid provided by the state to Holocaust survivors, World War II veterans, immigrants from Morocco and Algeria under Vichy rule, and survivors of the Farhud in Iraq. Prior to its enactment, Holocaust survivors were entitled to legal aid without being subject to a financial eligibility test only in matters relating to benefits, grants and payments to which they are entitled as Holocaust survivors. The Law expands both the list of groups eligible for assistance and the scope of matters in which they will be entitled to assistance. It also determines that these groups are entitled to service in all matters handled by the legal aid bureaus, regardless of a financial eligibility test. For example, following this legislation, they will be entitled to free legal aid in matters of public housing and in drafting enduring powers of attorney.
