A long-term care benefit is paid by the National Insurance Institute to a person who has reached retirement age, resides at home, and requires the assistance of another person to perform daily activities. The National Insurance Law provides that a person entitled to a long-term care benefit shall not be entitled to the benefit during a period in which he is staying in a nursing institution. However, an insured person who is hospitalized in a hospital shall continue to be entitled to the long-term care benefit for a period that, prior to this amendment, stood at 14 days from the date of hospitalization. The long-term care benefit paid during the hospitalization period enables the provision of nursing care during hospitalization. This amendment extends the period and provides that the long-term care benefit shall be paid to an insured person hospitalized in a hospital for 30 days.
