About the law and the debate
Official summary of the law (Knesset)
The Firearms Ordinance, 1949, stipulates that a social worker treating a person who becomes aware that that person possesses a firearm, and who believes this poses a danger to that person or to the public, shall report this to the Director of the Ministry of Labor and Welfare, who may transmit the information, among others, to the licensing official and to the Israel Defense Forces. Under Amendment No. 26, this provision was expanded so that the social worker may also report cases in which they become aware that the person they are treating has submitted an application for a firearm license, as well as cases in which they become aware that a family member of the patient, past or present, possesses a firearm or has submitted an application for a firearm license, provided that, in their opinion, there is a danger to that person, their family member, or the public. In addition, the procedure for transferring information between the Ministry of Welfare and Social Security, to which such reports are to be transmitted, and the Firearms Licensing Division, as well as between the Ministry and security bodies that supply firearms to those serving with them, was regulated.
