About the law and the debate

Official summary of the law (Knesset)

The Prevention of Domestic Violence Law, 1991 authorizes the court to issue a protective order removing a person from his family members if one of the grounds set out in Section 3 of the Law exists, concerning situations in which a person poses a danger to a family member. Section 7 of the Law establishes that a person who violates such a protective order may be arrested if the order includes a prohibition on entering the family member's apartment. Amendment No. 16 establishes that a decision not to arrest may only be made by the officer in charge of investigations, and that he will be obligated to provide reasons for his decision.
