The Passports Law (Amendment No. 7), 2016 (hereinafter - the Law) was passed by the Knesset on 2 August 2016. The Law provides that the validity period of a travel document shall generally be five years instead of two years. The Law also authorizes the Minister of Interior to order the issuance of a particular travel document or a particular type of travel documents for a period shorter than five years, and to extend the validity of such a travel document for additional periods not exceeding a cumulative total of five years. In addition, the Law provides that a person who has been given a passport or travel document must take reasonable measures to safeguard it and to prevent its misuse.
