About the law and the debate

Official summary of the law (Knesset)

The Law for the Improvement of Municipal Enforcement and Supervision in Local Authorities was enacted as a temporary provision in 2011, and began as a pilot in several local authorities. The purpose of the law is to improve the supervisory and enforcement capability of local authorities regarding offenses within their area of responsibility, as well as to assist the Israel Police in actions to prevent violence. To this end, the law authorizes municipal inspectors and regulates the establishment of a municipal policing framework. Over the years, the temporary provision has been extended several times and its application has been expanded to additional authorities. In Amendment No. 12 to the law, Section 23 was amended so that the validity of the law was extended for an additional period, until 31 October 2024.
