About the law and the debate
Official summary of the law (Knesset)
It is established that the Director General of the Ministry of Health, or a person authorized by him for this purpose, may grant a certificate in podiatry limited to podiatric procedures that do not include invasive treatment and local anesthesia of the foot, as listed in the Fifth Schedule to the Law for Regulation of Occupation in Health Professions, 2008, to a person holding a certificate attesting to the completion of studies in podology outside Israel and who meets all the conditions required as detailed in the Law. This health professional shall be called a podologist. Such a certificate of completion of studies will be recognized only if the studies began before 1 May 2029. The Minister of Health, with the approval of the Knesset Health Committee, may postpone, by order, the said date by two additional periods, each of which shall not exceed three years. It is further established that the period of prior experience required of podiatrists and podiatric surgeons in order to receive a professional certificate will be shortened from two and a half years to a total of one and a half years, of which at least half a year shall be supervised work. It is further established that the arrangement will not apply to an Israeli resident whose center of life was in Israel before leaving it for the purpose of studies in the field. Transitional provisions were also established regarding a person who worked as a podologist in Israel on the eve of the commencement of the Law, to enable him to receive a professional certificate under the conditions detailed in the Law. Finally, the Patient's Rights Law, 1996, was amended so that a podologist is a caregiver for purposes of the Law. The amendment comes into effect on 1 May 2024.
