חוק לעידוד מחקר ופיתוח בתעשייה (תיקון מס' 7), התשע"ה-2015 (להלן – התיקון) אושר בקריאה השנייה והשלישית ביום י"ג באב התשע"ה (29 ביולי 2015). במסגרת התיקון הוקמה רשות לאומית לחדשנות טכנולוגית, שתהיה הגוף האמון על יישום המדיניות הממשלתית בכל הנוגע לעידוד וקידום החדשנות הטכנולוגית בתעשייה. הרשות תוקם כתאגיד ציבורי שיפעל בהתאם למטרות הקבועות בחוק. ראש הרשות יהיה המדען הראשי והאורגנים של הרשות יהיו מועצת הרשות, המנהל הכללי של הרשות וועדות המחקר.
